- When a pregnant woman consumes alcohol, it passes through the placenta to the growing fetus. Because a developing baby's body breaks down alcohol much more slowly than an adult's, a fetus's blood alcohol level can rise much higher than its mother's and stay elevated longer.
- A new federal report by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) indicates that about 1 in three young adults (ages 21-25) have driven while under the influence of alcohol.
- Among eighth graders, higher truancy rates were linked to greater rates of alcohol use in the past month.
