- According to the National Highway Traffic Safety, during 2008, over 65 percent of fatal drunk-driving deaths involve drivers whose blood alcohol concentration is over the legal limit in their state.
- How does alcohol affect a person? Alcohol affects every organ in the body. It is a central nervous system depressant that is rapidly absorbed from the stomach and small intestine into the bloodstream. Alcohol is metabolized in the liver by enzymes; however, the liver can only metabolize a small amount of alcohol at a time, leaving the excess alcohol to circulate throughout the body. The intensity of the effect of alcohol on the body is directly related to the amount consumed.
- Men average about 12.5 binge drinking episodes per person per year, while women average about 2.7 binge drinking episodes per year.
- The negative health effects of long term alcoholism include fatty liver and cirrhosis, cardiomyopathy (breakdown of heart muscle), brain shrinkage and cell death (particularly memory areas), ulceration, and inflammation of the pancreas.
