- Binge drinking (consuming 4 or more drinks per occasion for women; 5 or more drinks per occasion for men) is responsible for over half of the deaths and two-thirds of the YPLL (years of potential life lost) due to excessive drinking, and is associated with many health and social problems, including alcohol-impaired driving, interpersonal violence, risky sexual activity, and unintended pregnancy.
- In general, the risk of youth experiencing these problems is greater for those who binge drink than for those who do not binge drink.
- There is no safe level of alcohol use during pregnancy.
- Individual reactions to alcohol vary widely, and are influenced by a variety of factors such as age, genetics, use of drugs, the rate of the alcohol consumption, the amount of food consumed before drinking, and an individual's physical condition in regard to their weight and fitness level.
