Alcohol depresses the body�''s immune system making it much easier for an individual that abuses alcohol to get sick. Alcohol also disrupts sleep patterns; much research has indicated that a lack of sleep depresses the immune system.
Heavy bouts of drinking can result in an individual experiencing a condition that is commonly referred to as a"hangover", which may include headache, nausea, shakiness, and sometimes vomiting. This condition is due partly to alcohol poisoning and partly to the body's reaction to withdrawal from alcohol. There is currently no effective cure for this condition beyond refraining from heavy alcohol consumption.
A study of 4,700 twins found that teens that have friends that consume alcohol are more likely to drink themselves, but this influence may be especially strong for girls.
The connection between a lower body weight and moderate alcohol consumption is particularly strong among women; this connection can also be found in men, but to a much lesser degree.
